Bear Goes to Brooklyn: Dun-Well Doughnuts

Following our adventures at Waffle and Wolf, the Brunch with Bear team was on the lookout for a second dessert. The result? A short walk over to Dun-Well Doughnuts, a vegan doughnut shop inspired by the Simpsons. Boasting an enormous variety of flavors, Dun-Well Doughnuts is a dairy-free dream come true, joining the ranks of dessert destinations such as Babycakes and Grom.

Dun-Well Doughnuts is located on Montrose Avenue in Brooklyn, between Bushwick and Humboldt Avenues. The shop is a short walk from the Montrose stop on the L train, but not too far from the Grand Street or the Graham Avenue stops on the L trains as well. If you’re coming from Manhattan, the L train runs across 14th Street, which is easily accessible from Union Square or the surrounding areas.

The atmosphere of Dun-Well Doughnuts is definitely vintage, and slightly dusty. On the wall and shelves are decorated with lots of random tchotchkes, some cute, some creepy. The lighting was dim, but the large picture window in the front kept the establishment from feeling dismal. It seemed like a local spot for neighborhood get-togethers as well as destination for more foodie-types.

Dun-Well Doughnuts’ list of products boasts hundreds of different flavors, such as “Downton Abbey” or “French Toast” doughnuts. In reality, they serve about twelve or fifteen seasonal flavors presented in a glass case, with trays and trays of doughnuts easily visible behind the register. We did ask what flavor the “Downton Abbey” doughnut would have been, and the cashier told us that he remembered an English tea or an Earl Gray doughnut a couple years ago.

We picked up a cinnamon sugar and an apple-cider glazed doughnut, which survived the cold and windy trek back to Manhattan, including a detour to visit Strand Bookstore. We didn’t even need to warm them up, and they went perfectly with some hot tea. In fact, the doughnuts were so delicious that I even savored the leftover icing!

Though this trip to Williamsburg was merely introductory, Dun-Well Doughnuts was a gem of a find amongst the hipster gastronomy and thrift shops. Doughnuts are a snack that are very rarely dairy-free, so even though it was a long trek out to Dun-Well Doughnuts, the Brunch with Bear team would happily go again!
