Autumn is when we wrap ourselves in fluffy blankets and sip hot cider while watching trash movies on Netflix. Autumn is when we think of Meg Ryan and her bouquet of pencils and the way she charmed Tom Hanks while scolding him over a plate of caviar in the classic romantic comedy You’ve Got Mail. Nora Ephron’s knack for putting Meg Ryan in chunky sweaters is the cinematic equivalent of the time my mother let me wear a lime green bucket hat and wander into the Lunt-Fontanne theater to see Beauty and the Beast for the first time. We go back to Zabar’s for the same reason that we keep watching romantic comedies—it reminds us of the good times in the city, when there were good friends, and good weather, and good food. … More Zabar’s
